Changpas, the Nomadic people who tend their yaks here and a few wild asses are the only sign of life on this isolated and long road. This belt not only barren but is known for fast blowing winds, sandstorms & extreme temperatures in the early morning and evenings. Fresh stream water can be considered a scarcity in this area though you might find some isolated mountain streams flowing down from the Tanglangla. The ride is easy going being a flat plateau area, but the road, which stretches on ahead, is not as smooth as it looks. There are tiny bumps all along.

Where we road diverge to Tsokar and Taglang la pass. we start biking at the foot of Taglang la pass. 17 kms biking uphill to cross Taglang la pass. which is quite challenging for even the fittest riders. Reaching the top is a very satisfying experience & then it's all down hill with smooth gradients till the base of the Pass. The Chortens along the road in the villages announce our arrival in the heart of Buddhist culture. The greenery changes the landscape, and the red coloured mountains surrounding us and reflected in the river only add to the beauty as we cross Rumtse –which offer tea shops and Gya Miru  for overnight camp.

Day 17: Gya - Upshi – Hemis - leh 3500 mtrs. 61 kms. Bike. 5 hrs.

For next 20 Kms we ride on some metalled & unmetalled stretches of roads & cross over the Upshi bridge across the river Indus. The river originates in China & crosses over into India somewhere in the higher regions of these great Himalayan ranges. The road condition improves considerably as we follow more traffic from the cantonment area & local villages going to Leh. Alchi Gompa, located near the small village of Saspol. It is one of the earliest monasteries built before the invading wars began in the 15th century; Alchi was built on lowlands, rather than on a hilltop as others were, in order to protect them from marauding armies. The rambling monastery has six main buildings, the Dukhang or main assembly hall, the Sun tsek or three-tiered temple; the adjoining Manjusri Lha-khang and Lotsawa Leh-khang temples; the Lha-khang Soma or New temple and the Kanjur- Lha-khan.

“I have completed the Parang la trek from Karzok to Kibber and Kanamo peak from 08 Aug. 2011 to 20 Aug. 2011 organized by Potala Adventurers, with leading Guide Umesh and assistant Guide Ravinder. They are professional, experience, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.  Umesh has assisted me several times on the river crossings and willing to wait for me, as I am always walking slowly. With no complaints, and also give me support with encouragement on passing the Parang la pass and on the Kanamo peak and give full support on during the road blocking on the Batal – Chatru. Manali: Beas Kund trek and Solang valley - 3 nights 4 days

Mr. Prem Singh,

Thanks for organising the trek - from our perspective it was very enjoyable and met our objective of a light and comfortable trek. I would definitely like to recommend your name to anyone going for a trek starting from Manali and especially highlight the flexibility you offered in organising a cost effective trek for only two people, the good and hot food and courteous and helpful staff.

We are currently planning another trek (after 1-2 months), may be to Hamta pass, with a group of 2-4 people. Will be in touch with you for the same.

Once again thanks very much for a memorable experience.

regards,

Rajat and friend - 18 June - 21 June 2011

Manali: Hampta Pass Trek

Potala Adventurers has gone out of the way to make my Hamta pass trek truly memorable.  The Guide and porters were true professionals. They were able to assist me in providing information to questions I have and also helped me cross steep glaciers along the way. This is crucial for me, having little experience walking in ice. I also wish to compliment them on the elaborated food dished out everyday and appreciate the extra blankets when weather turns cold. I also deeply appreciate the company for helping me make pre and post trip accommodation and onward travel arrangements without being asked and providing invaluable advice.

David L. – SINGAPORE – 11 June 2011

I went on the Hamta pass trek in early June.  I had not read much about the trek before I left, so I didn’t know what I had coming. I was positively surprised with the good knowledge the Guide had about the areas we were passing through.  He seems to have real passion for mountains and trekking, which was really encouraging for me. The cook did his best to provide us with the nice dishes as far as it could be done.  All the staff on the trek acted professionally in every situation, even when my trek partner was forced to make decision to return with the porters. The cook and the Guide did their best to serve me the food I needed on the last two days of the trek, although we didn’t carry any cooking equipment with us. The tent and sleeping bags we were given were also just right for the wind and weather conditions. Altogether an amazing experience I won’t forget.
