Trek the Kang La pass - Miyar valley to Zanskar -

The Miyar Valley, located in the Indian part of the Great Himalaya Range, stretches for over 100 km from Udaipur to the Kang La pass. The locals - the Tharanga people - are mainly shepherds and farmers much like the Gaddis but follow a curious mix of Hindu/Buddhist religion.
It is the westernmost of the Lahul valley's on the watershed between the Lahul & Zanskar in Ladakh, it's known for its profusion of wild flowers and medicinal herbs especially during July and August and its breathtaking landscape of quaint villages and rolling meadows which are replaced by glaciers and big rock walls as you move deeper into the valley. In recent years the valley has also attracted a lot of climbing teams (Teams from Slovenia, Poland, Italy, US, UK & India and Spanish too, It is hosts hundreds of peaks that are, by Himalayan standards, accessible and low in altitude, with very few exceeding 6000 m. As a result, Alpine-style routes are possible here that have a technical standard not normally seen in the Himalaya. The wealth of climbing possibilities here led Chris Bonington to dub it as “the Yosemite of India”;
Famous peaks in the area are: Menthosa 6443mtrs / 21260ft is the largest peak in the area. For trekkers the Udaipur (Urgus roadhead) -Kang La -Padum (zanskar traverse) is quite popular another viable option is to link up the Chandra Valley and Miyar via the Taralumsa pass. Another interesting option would be the crossing of the Poat La pass which would link up the Kishtwar Region to the Miyar Valley.

Trek the Kang la pass - detailed  itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in New Delhi (230m).

Arrival at IGI airport New Delhi, transfer to hotel.

Day 02: New Delhi – Manali (2040m).

Today after breakfast transfer to airport, fly New Delhi – Kullu Manali or drive overnight deluxe bus to Manali.

Day 03: Manali

Sight-seeing in around Manali or preparation for the expedition.

Day 04: ManaliI – Rohtang la pass (3,978 m) – Udaipur (2650 mtrs.).

Drive 145 km. (7/8 hrs): the journey starts from Manali, at the head of the lush green Kullu valley. The road slowly winds up the Rohtang-la pass (3’978m.), the first of the high passes, then down into the Lahoul valley. The landscape changes dramatically, the greenery being replaced by barren hillsides, where the village with their bountiful fields of barley, peas and potatoes, stand out in stark contrast. On entering Lahoul the Buddhist influence is visible in the many monasteries crossed on the way. The people here have distinct Tibetan features. Today we drive along the Chenab River. On the way we visit famous Trilok Nath temple and Mrikula Devi temple at Udaipur.

Day 05: Udaipur – Chamrat ( 2,090m), trek 15 kms. on unmattaled road.

From Udaipur follow a road, which has recently been constructed, through the narrow gorge making the entrance to Miyar valley. Cross the wooden bridge before Chamrat and continue on the true left bank of the valley. The village of Chamrat is with Mani walls and prayer flags, is the first village in the Miyar valley, on the way visit gompa at Karpat.

Day 06: Chamrat - Urgos (3,250m), 5/6 hrs.

Trail leads through flowered meadows and peas and millet fields before re-crossing the Miyar River on a well-constructed bridge to the village of Karput. Urgos is at the confluence with the valley leading to the Mt. Menthosa (6,443m), overnight camp.

Day 07: Rest and acclimatisation day. Or hike towards base camp of mt. Menthosa, the highest peak in Miyar valley.

Day 08: Urgos - Tharang (3,450m) 4/5 hrs.

Now gentle walk down to the river floor, a newly constructed bridge to be cross, further 2 km on the true left side of the valley, to the village of Khanjar (3450m), also the last police check post.  The trail crosses a wide alluvian fan before a gradual ascent to the highest settlement of Tharang. 200 m climb to a beautiful campsite, with numerous snow-clad peaks far side of Chenab valley.

Day 09: Tharang – Gumba nallah (3,900m), 6 hrs.

Now gradual ascent over rich grazing pasture, yak herder from Zanskar can be seen nearby Taralasuma pass. From camp at Gumba Nullah, you gain glimpses of some of the 6,000 m peaks of the Himalayas.

Day 10: Gumba nallah – camp I (4,200m)

From camp 2 hrs treks to the shepherds camp locally known as Khai got 4100m. Further to an open meadows than crossing some side streams., with a comfortable base before heading to Zanskar.

Day 11: Camp I – Camp II (4750m) 6/7 hrs.

Miyar glacier, which is 28 km long, from camp at the snout glacier there is choice of route. Walk across the terminal moraine to the left side of the glacier, route tiring ups and downs along and increasingly ill-defined trail.

Demanding terrains for the first 7/8 kms untill the confluence with a glacier flowing from the East side, easy going from here with a gradual ascent over smooth black ice. An occasional well exposed crevasses to negotiate. Camp just above the confluence with the side glacier, there is 3 passes and the center one is the actual pass.

Day 12: Camp II – Kang la (5450 m) – Camp III (4800m), 7/8 hrs.

A magnificent views down the valley to Menthosa 6443m. At the head of the glacier, a large snow field curves to the East side to the base of the pass. 250 m ascent from the snowfield to the pass is not hard. Better to rope up to crossing crevasses, than 1.5 kms long Kang la pass enclosed by rock cliff to the north and snow walls to the south. After crossing Kang la pass camp near the two confluences of the 2 streams.

Day 13: Camp III - Burdan, 5 hrs.

Now follow the true right side of the valley. After crossing the many side streams and grassy campsites, 2/3 km down the valley. Arriving at rocky plateau, trail descends steeply in places through meadows and boulder fields. Tenasa Tokpo remains on the right bank, it flows down to a grassy meadow above the Tsarap River. Continue for 2 hrs to reach Burdan, overnight camp.

Day 14: Burdan – Padum ( 3540 m ) 5/6 hrs.

Ladakh to Spiti trek and climb of Kanamo peak

“I have completed the Parang la trek from Karzok to Kibber and Kanamo peak from 08 Aug. 2011 to 20 Aug. 2011 organized by Potala Adventurers, with leading Guide Umesh and assistant Guide Ravinder. They are professional, experience, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.  Umesh has assisted me several times on the river crossings and willing to wait for me, as I am always walking slowly. With no complaints, and also give me support with encouragement on passing the Parang la pass and on the Kanamo peak and give full support on during the road blocking on the Batal – Chatru. He also shared with me of his climbing experience and others about the regional history & culture to make the trip interesting.  Ravinder served as assistant guide but also acted as cook on the trek. He has done a good job on cooking includes breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner. I like much of his fried rice and noodles, potato chips and mixed veg. He also clean up campsite area and burnoff the garbage before leaving, in support of the eco-tourism.

Manali: Beas Kund trek and Solang valley - 3 nights 4 days

Mr. Prem Singh,

Thanks for organising the trek - from our perspective it was very enjoyable and met our objective of a light and comfortable trek. I would definitely like to recommend your name to anyone going for a trek starting from Manali and especially highlight the flexibility you offered in organising a cost effective trek for only two people, the good and hot food and courteous and helpful staff.

We are currently planning another trek (after 1-2 months), may be to Hamta pass, with a group of 2-4 people. Will be in touch with you for the same.

Once again thanks very much for a memorable experience.

regards,

Rajat and friend - 18 June - 21 June 2011

Manali: Hampta Pass Trek

Potala Adventurers has gone out of the way to make my Hamta pass trek truly memorable.  The Guide and porters were true professionals. They were able to assist me in providing information to questions I have and also helped me cross steep glaciers along the way. This is crucial for me, having little experience walking in ice. I also wish to compliment them on the elaborated food dished out everyday and appreciate the extra blankets when weather turns cold. I also deeply appreciate the company for helping me make pre and post trip accommodation and onward travel arrangements without being asked and providing invaluable advice.

David L. – SINGAPORE – 11 June 2011

I went on the Hamta pass trek in early June.  I had not read much about the trek before I left, so I didn’t know what I had coming. I was positively surprised with the good knowledge the Guide had about the areas we were passing through.  He seems to have real passion for mountains and trekking, which was really encouraging for me. The cook did his best to provide us with the nice dishes as far as it could be done.  All the staff on the trek acted professionally in every situation, even when my trek partner was forced to make decision to return with the porters. The cook and the Guide did their best to serve me the food I needed on the last two days of the trek, although we didn’t carry any cooking equipment with us. The tent and sleeping bags we were given were also just right for the wind and weather conditions. Altogether an amazing experience I won’t forget.
